An Igbo epic of destiny, strength, and the cost of a broken covenant.
Ikechi’s Covenant is an Igbo epic stage play, inspired by the biblical tale of Samson and Delilah, creatively retold to address societal issues such as love, betrayal, loyalty, righteousness, corruption, and the importance of family.
Set in the mystical lands of Umuchi and Ogbeguru, the story follows Ikechi, a divinely chosen warrior, tasked with liberating his people from the tyrannical rule of the Ogbeguru kingdom. Despite his extraordinary strength and divine mandate, Ikechi’s weaknesses — his lust for wine and women — become his downfall. As he plans to marry Akweke, a woman from the enemy village, Ikechi’s family and loved ones, including his brother Ebube and childhood admirer Ndidi, must navigate the tensions between their loyalty to him and their duty to their community.
With vivid storytelling, traditional and contemporary songs, dances, and captivating drama, Ikechi’s Covenant mirrors the complexities of human nature and the consequences of choices made against divine purpose. The play is a celebration of Igbo culture while delivering a profound message about strength, responsibility, and redemption.
